Star Clusters and Asterisms

Star clusters are large groups of stars. Two main types of star clusters can be distinguished: globular clusters are tight groups of hundreds to millions of old stars which are gravitationally bound, while open clusters are more loosely clustered groups of stars, generally containing fewer than a few hundred members, and are often very young, (Wikipedia).

An asterism is an observed pattern or group of stars in the sky. Asterisms can be any identified pattern or group of stars, and therefore are a more general concept than the formally defined 88 constellations, Wikipedia.

Messier 13 is the brightest globular cluster in the northern sky and was discovered by the English astronomer Sir Edmond Halley as early as 1714.

The Owl Cluster NGC 457 is the brightest open star cluster in Cassiopeia and one of the most beautiful objects of its kind in the northern sky. The open star cluster NGC 436 is below left in the image.
The open star cluster NGC 7789 lies about 8,000 light-years away toward the constellation Cassiopeia. A late 18th century deep sky discovery of astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel, the cluster is also known as Caroline's Rose.
NGC 2419, also called Galactic Wanderer, is an open star cluster in the constellation of Cepheus. It is heavily reddened and contains an unusually large number of red giants and supergiants.
Messier 44 or Praesepe (Latin for crib) is an open star cluster that can be seen with the naked eye as a nebula in the evening winter and spring sky.
The Pleiades, Messier 45 is an open star cluster containing middle-aged, hot B-type stars in the north-west of the constellation Taurus.
